It’s not YOU who is thinking. It’s your parts.
Thinking is parts talking.
If you try to stop thinking, you’re trying to make your parts stop talking. When does telling someone to shut up ever help?
They’re talking for a reason.
Thinking isn’t the problem.
Getting lost in the thoughts and identifying with them is.
You’re not thinking. Your parts are talking to you.
So listen to the thoughts (just the same way you’d listen to another person talking) and take a deep thoughtful breath. Let what they said hit you, land and digest it.
Slow down to reflect on what your parts just said to you.
Respond to them respectfully.
Ask them questions.
Invite them to share more.
Tell me more about that.
What else?
Anything else?
If slowing down to listen to your thoughts (from this “outside” perspective of Self) is challenging, it might be because there is too much movement in general. Your mind is moving, your body is moving, the world is moving around you.
Drop down to the ground and take child’s pose. Close your eyes. Remove external input and distractions. Physically turn inwards. SIMPLY EVERYTHING ELSE so all that remains is your pure consciousness inside your dark inner landscape and allllll the parts in there waiting for you to finally show up and listen to them.
Sometimes, I like to imagine a palace or a temple. I am the queen or the goddess sitting on her throne and the people of the land are ushered in one by one. The queen is holding audience with her people. Sometimes, I imagine a team meeting. I’m the CEO and all the parts are my employees. Sometimes, we’re a family and I’m the head of the household and the parts are each family members, many of them kids and teenagers. Whatever image feel appropriate in the moment, I tune into it and welcome my parts.
I’m here. I’m listening.
You each get a chance to speak.
Take turns.
It’s reliable. As each part expresses itself (and feels complete), it can sit down in the circle. Then it’s the next part’s turn. You must lead them. Be clear and firm. Be loving. One at a time. No interruptions. Show your parts how to interact in an orderly way with respect for one another. You are their leader. Self is the leader. Self can hold and manage them all. They’ll see how you lead and you’ll earn their respect and trust. Eventually, they’ll all cooperate smoothly. In the beginning it might be tricky. This will take time. Self is patient. This, being with yourself, all the parts of who you are, is the most important thing you’ll do in your life.
All your parts reside within or around your body. Use asana, yoga poses, as a way to slow down and create space for Self to show up so you can meet these parts.
